Many Americans are skipping meals, and many shoppers are visiting more stores and using reward programs more frequently to save money on groceries, according to the latest data from dunnhumby.
The slight year-over-year decrease comes as more consumers place orders online, but shop less frequently and buy fewer items, according to Brick Meets Click and Mercatus.
With decreased SNAP benefits, more recipients are turning to private brands, while only 15% of those surveyed said they are not cutting back on spending at all.
Americans ordered fewer groceries online in May compared to the same month last year, as online grocery sales made up just 12% of total grocery sales for the month.
