Amazon Fresh has released its first-ever installment of The Cart Report: Amazon Fresh Summer Grilling, giving a glimpse into customers’ shopping habits ahead of July Fourth, including which private label products have gained the most traction.
The report is based on Amazon Fresh purchases both in-store and online made between May 1 and Sept. 30, 2022.
“We uncovered the most popular and trending summer grocery staples to answer burning grilling questions like, ‘Is ketchup more popular than mustard? Are Americans flipping more hamburgers or hot dogs? How controversial is mayonnaise?’ Our data reveals national trends and regional divides that help set the record straight on what Americans really prefer to have stocked for their summer barbecues,” wrote the retailer in a blog post.
The seven top takeaways from the first installment of The Cart Report include the following:
- Mayo is America’s favorite summer condiment: In nearly every state where Amazon Fresh delivers, mayonnaise was the most-purchased condiment, according to the retailer. Amazon Fresh customers purchase more than 430,000 gallons of it each summer, although Amazon Fresh customers in Washington, D.C., are more likely to buy hot sauce than any other condiment between May and September.
- In the great ketchup vs. mustard debate, mustard can’t “catch-up”: Last summer, Amazon Fresh customers purchased more than 185,000 gallons of ketchup, which was more than double the amount of mustard (83,550 gallons). New Yorkers purchased over 20-times as much ketchup as they did mustard.
- Americans are flipping more hamburgers than hot dogs: Amazon Fresh said it sells about three-times more hamburgers than hot dogs and sold nearly 2 million hamburgers last summer.
- Amazon Fresh customers purchased over 845,000 pounds of pickles last summer: This number equates to the weight of three blue whales and nearly double the weight of the Statue of Liberty. The top three states with the most pickle purchases were California, Illinois, and Texas.
- Customers across the country favor Cookies ‘N Cream over every other ice cream flavor: Americans purchased nearly 4 million gallons of ice cream from Amazon Fresh last summer, which is more than 243 scoops a minute. Top-rated and private label ice creams include Happy Belly Cookies ‘N’ Cream Ice Cream, Aplenty Sea Salt Caramel Truffle Ice Cream and Happy Belly Neapolitan Ice Cream.
- Last summer, Amazon Fresh customers purchased enough dip to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool: Hummus, salsa, and queso were a few of the most popular dips among Amazon Fresh customers. Shop top-rated dips from Amazon Fresh include Amazon Kitchen Garlic Hummus, Amazon Fresh Chunky Salsa and Amazon Kitchen Roasted Red Pepper Hummus
- Your hometown may influence your favorite mustard: Customers in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. agree that classic yellow mustard reigns supreme, while New Yorkers, New Jerseyans and Pennsylvanians prefer spicy brown.
Amazon currently has 44 Amazon Fresh locations and 28 Amazon Go stores in the U.S.
