Walmart.com launches exclusive roast-to-order coffee experience

dan

This month Walmart.com is offering an exclusive roast-to-order coffee experience, partnering with subsidiaries of Luna Gourmet Coffee & Tea Co., Colorado’s largest family owned roaster.

Unlike traditionally ordering coffee online, the experience on Walmart.com enables shoppers to order artisanally roasted coffees where the beans are roasted in small batches only after an order is placed. The personal order enables the coffees to be delivered to Walmart.com customers at peak freshness, with a “roasted on” date displayed on the bag.

The Luna coffee companies providing this experience for Walmart.com shoppers are Boulder Organic Coffee, a sustainable coffee brewer, sourcing specialty grade Arabica beans, and Boca Java, a specialty online coffee retailer with 150 varieties of roast-to-order coffees.

The blends start at $8.44 and the exclusive experience is a key differentiator for Walmart.com. Both Boca Java and Boulder Organic Coffee use Arabica beans that are hand-picked from premier regions around the world, reflecting the top 2% of coffee beans available.

“Boca Java and Boulder Organic Coffee are the perfect partners to bring this exciting new offering to our customers,” said Kevin Head, vice president, divisional merchandise manager – breakfast and bread at Walmart. “They are capable of producing a high-quality product at the appropriate scale to deliver fresh, roasted coffee right to our customers’ doorstep at an exceptional price.”

The partnership also aligns with Walmart’s goal to expand and enhance sustainable sourcing to cover 20 key commodities by 2025, including coffee. For example, Walmart announced in September 2019 that it was sourcing Walmart U.S. private brand coffee as certified sustainable through Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance or UTZ.

Our personalized program merges quality and convenience for Walmart.com customers,” said Jason Barrow, co-owner and president of Denver-based Luna Gourmet. “Customers order, we roast it and then send it out the day after, shoppers can enjoy Specialty Grade, craft coffee that is roasted specifically for them and delivered on-demand to their door."
