Walmart continues upgrading technology at its regional distribution centers.

Walmart regional distribution centers (RDC) in Arizona and Arkansas will be updated with robotics and software automation as part of the retailer’s ongoing effort to streamline operations at its network of RDC’s across the U.S.

According to a report in Chain Store Age, a sister publication of Store Brands, Walmart will install high-tech automation from artificial intelligence-based supply chain technology company Symbiotic LLC in its RDCs in Buckeye, Ariz., and Searcy, Ark. The projects at each location will be completed in phases over the next several years.

Walmart officials said the new technology allows it to double the number of cases processed per hour compared to a traditional RDC. By the end of 2025, the retailer expects that roughly 65% of its stores will receive merchandise from high-tech distribution centers.

The Buckeye RDC has been operating for nearly 25 years while the Searcy RDC has been in operation for 35 years.

The technology upgrades at the two RDCs are the latest effort by Walmart to upgrade distribution centers across the U.S. In July, the retailer unveiled its investment in five high-tech perishable distribution centers. The first opened in 2021 in Shafter, Calif., with the second located in Lancaster, Tex. Additional facilities will be located in Wellford, South Carolina; Belvidere, Illinois; and Pilesgrove, New Jersey.

Dave Guggina, executive vice president of Supply Chain Operations at Walmart U.S., said the largest retailer in the U.S. has taken three district approaches in upgrading its ambient and fulfillment networks as the company focuses on the future of its grocery network.

He noted that while the retailer is optimistic about the impact new technology will have on its business, it also feels the upgrades will create additional opportunities for its associates.

“Technology is evolving physically demanding jobs into roles where associates are operating and maintaining high-tech systems, leading to an improved quality of life,” he said.
