Walmart is enhancing the technology in use at its distribution centers across the country as the largest retailer in the U.S. works to meet the ever-changing needs of its customers.

In a recent blog post by Dave Guggina, executive vice president of Supply Chain Operations at Walmart U.S., he noted the largest retailer in the U.S. has taken three district approaches in upgrading its ambient and fulfillment networks as the company focuses on the future of its grocery network.

The retailer has invested in constructing five high-tech perishable distribution centers. The first opened in 2021 in Shafter, Calif., with the second located in Lancaster, Tex. Additional facilities will be located in Wellford, South Carolina; Belvidere, Illinois; and Pilesgrove, New Jersey.

Additionally, Walmart is also expanding its four traditional perishable distribution centers by adding more than 500,000 square feet of automation per set to increase capacity for fresh products. Facilities in Mankato, Minn.; Mebane, N.C.; Garrett, Ind.; and Shelbyville, Tenn., will be expanded.

The retailer’s Winter Haven, Fla., perishable distribution center is undergoing upgrades as new technology is integrated into the facility. Walmart will use the location as a test case to learn more about the feasibility and requirements of retrofitting an existing grocery building with automated technology.

Guggina noted that while the retailer is optimistic about the impact new technology will have on its business, it also feels the upgrades will create additional opportunities for its associates.

“Technology is evolving physically demanding jobs into roles where associates are operating and maintaining high-tech systems, leading to an improved quality of life,” he said.
