Early in 2025, Natural Grocers expanded its assortment of private label household cleaners.

Natural Grocers is expanding the list of ingredients that will no longer be found in its assortment of cleaning products.

Building off its household cleaning standards that debuted in 2016, the retailer said its latest updates reflect a growing scientific understanding of the impact that certain common ingredients can have on indoor air quality, ecosystems, and overall well-being.

The new standards now ban formaldehyde donors, phthalates, parabens, ethanolamines, glycol ethers, and quaternary ammonium compounds. With this update, more than 100 ingredients are now prohibited from use in household cleaning products sold at Natural Grocers.

"We've always believed that cleaning your home shouldn't come at the expense of your health or the environment," said Raquel Isely, vice president of Marketing at Natural Grocers. "That's why we're committed to providing our customers with safe, sustainable choices, and making it easy for them to understand exactly what's in the products they use every day. These updated standards help our customers make confident, informed decisions, whether they're shopping for dish soap, fabric softener, or multi-surface cleaner."

Unlike federal regulations, which do not require full ingredient disclosure for household cleaning products, Natural Grocers requires every brand it sells to provide a complete ingredient list on packaging. While limited exceptions are made for proprietary fragrance and enzyme blends, these components must still comply with Natural Grocers' safety and environmental standards.

Earlier this year, Natural Grocers added new items to its private label assortment of household cleaning products. The products are vegan, cruelty-free, and made without parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances and are sold in containers made from sustainable sugar cane.

Products in the line include dish soap, laundry stain remover, organic fabric softener, daily shower cleaner, organic fruit & veggie wash, and an organic multi-surface cleaner.
