Walmart’s new environmental plan includes greener private brand products

11/7/2016

Bentonville, Ark.-based Walmart announced Nov. 4 that it is implementing several initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint and sell more environmentally friendly private brand items, as well as cleaner label own-brand food products.

One of the company’s goals is to ensure that all of its private brand packaging is 100 percent recyclable, reported an article in SeattleTimes.com. Walmart also aims to be the first retailer to have an emissions-reduction plan approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (sciencebasedtargets.org), a partnership of several sustainability-championing organizations.

In addition, Walmart is working with its private label food suppliers to eliminate certified synthetic colors, artificial flavors and other food additives where possible, according to the article.
