Walmart remains the largest retailer in the U.S., according to the National Retail Federation.

Walmart and Amazon remain the top two retailers in the United States, with both companies solidifying their positions in the National Retail Federation's annual Top 100 Retailers list.

Compiled by Kantar, retailers holding places 1 through 13 remain the same as in 2024, with the notable flip of Target ($106.73 billion) sliding down to No. 8 and Walgreens Boots Alliance ($110.38 billion) moving up to No. 7.

Walmart continues to top the list with 2024 U.S. retail sales of $568.70 billion, representing 7% growth for the retailer. Amazon retained its No. 2 spot with U.S. sales of $273.66 billion, followed by Costco Wholesale ($183.05 billion), The Kroger Co. ($150.79 billion) and The Home Depot ($148.21 billion).

In addition to Kroger, several grocers ranked in the Top 20. They include Albertsons at No. 10 ($79.57 billion), Publix at No. 12 ($59.74 billion), Ahold Delhaize USA at No. 13 ($59.20 billion), Aldi at No. 14 ($54.16 billion) and H-E-B at No. 16 ($41.22 billion).

"This year's Top 100 Retailers represent a diverse group of businesses that have adapted and evolved to a changing economic landscape," said Mark Mathews, executive director of research with the NRF. "As consumers evaluate their spending priorities, businesses are unlocking new ways to better connect with customers and retain loyalty."

Retailers with the largest sales growth by percentage in the Top 100 are JD Sports, up 51%; Aldi, up 14%; Sprouts Farmers Market, up 13%; and Grocery Outlet, up 10%.

"As with recent years, I would say you could take last year's list and just flip it over for 2025," said David Marcotte, senior vice president of global insights and technology at Kantar. "While the companies at the top of the list not only reflect those with the strongest retail sales, they are also a reflection of those that have remained nimble to a changing landscape from the impacts of trade policy and shifting consumer habits."

The Top 100 Retailers are ranked by past 52/53-week annual retail sales. In almost all instances, sales used to rank companies are for retail activity in the United States only.
