Walmart Remains Dominant Grocery Retailer

New data from Numerator finds that more than 20% of grocery dollars in the U.S. are spent at the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer

Walmart remains the top grocer in the U.S., new data from Numerator shows.

Walmart remains the dominant retailer in grocery, with more than 1 in 5 dollars spent at the Bentonville, Ark.-based mass merchant, according to new data from Numerator.

As of March 31, 2025, Walmart accounted for 21.2% of grocery dollars spent by consumers, down 0.3% from 2024. This is the third consecutive year Walmart accounted for more than 20% of grocery spending.

The next three retailers on the list — KrogerCostcoAlbertsons — combined accounted for 22.1% of dollars spent on groceries over the past 12 months ending March 31. 

Kroger is second on the list at 8.6%, down 0.4% from 2024, while third place Costco gained 0.5% from 2024 and now accounts for 8.5% of total grocery dollars spent. Fourth place Albertsons (5.0%) is down 0.1% from 2024 with fifth place Publix (4.1%) up 0.1% from the prior year.

Rounding out the Top-10 (in order) is Sam’s Club, 4.0% (+0.1% YOY); Ahold Delhaize, 3.9% (-0.2%), Aldi, 2.8% (flat), Target, 2.4% (flat), and H-E-B, 1.9% (-0.1%). 

Other notable retailers on the list include Whole Foods, 1.6% (+0.1%); Trader Joe’s, 1.4% (+0.1%); and Amazon, 1.4% (flat).
