Tractor Supply Company, the leading rural lifestyle retail chain that acquired the pet chain Petsense a few years ago, has made a change in leadership at the retailer. Matthew Rubin has been named senior vice president and general manager of Petsense, reporting directly to Hal Lawton, president and CEO of Tractor Supply.

Rubin will oversee the retailer’s move to enhance merchandising, which includes private brands such as True Source, and its overall customer experience. There are 183 Petsense stores across 25 states, a specialty pet supply retailer in smaller or mid-sized communities.

Rubin steps into the role with more than 20 years of experience in retail strategy, operations and merchandising. He previously served as senior vice president of business development and growth at The Michaels Companies, where he was responsible for developing and leading MichaelsPro, mergers and acquisitions, and managing key strategic growth initiatives.

Before Michales, Rubin served at Accenture Strategy’s North America Retail Practice, was a partner at Consolidated Venture Partners and Consolidated Marketing, and co-founder and finance partner in OnTrend Products.

He also has retailer experience as the vice president of specialty business operations at BJ’s Wholesale Club, where he managed product demonstration, member services, store-within-store partnerships and food services. He began his career at Office Depot in merchandising and strategic project leadership roles.

Rubin succeeds Steve Neibergall, vice president of Petsense, who will be retiring.
