Test Drive
The United States is a snack-loving nation. In fact, the majority of Americans — 94 percent — snack at least once per day, according to “Snacking Motivations and Attitudes — US,” a 2015 report from global market research firm Mintel.
But a growing number of American consumers are seeking out snacks perceived as being better for them. In fact, 33 percent of consumers Mintel surveyed admitted to snacking on foods that were more healthful than those they consumed in the previous year. Specifically of interest are “simple” ingredients and low calorie counts.
With that reality in mind, we set out to find a new store brand snack that fit in with the better-for-you trend. Simply Balanced Organic Baked Corn Puffs, Jalepeño and Cheddar Cheese from Minneapolis-based Target Corp. fit the bill. The product contains organic ingredients and only natural flavorings.
We purchased three of the 5.5-ounce bagged products for the promotional price of $2.79 apiece at a Chicago-area SuperTarget store.
