In an Oct. 10 e-mail sent to recent purchasers of its Simply Right baby wipes, Sam’s Club, Bentonville, Ark., announced that some of the wipes offered for sale beginning June 30 could be contaminated with B. cepacia bacteria, which pose "little medical risk to healthy people” but could cause infection in people with a weakened immune system or chronic lung disease. Nutek Disposables Inc., a division of Great Neck, N.Y.-based First Quality and the wipes’ supplier, informed Sam’s Club about the possible contamination.
Sam’s Club noted that as soon as it learned that some of the wipes did not meet its safety and quality standards, it voluntarily directed all of its stores to remove the product from shelves and took them down from its website.
“We continue to work with our supplier to quickly understand the facts and necessary next steps,” the e-mail read.
The retailer also advised consumers who purchased the affected product to discontinue further use and return the remaining wipes to Sam’s Club for a full refund.
