Lakeland, Fla.-based Publix announced it will build a distribution center in Greensboro, N.C., by the end of 2022 as part of a multiphase project it says will create up to 1,000 jobs by 2025, a press release stated.
The center is being developed to support the delivery of grocery products to Publix locations in the Carolinas and Virginia, the company said. A variety of job functions will be added in the administrative and maintenance departments as well as in the center’s new refrigerated warehouse.
The distribution center will be facilitated, in part, by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG), approved by North Carolina’s Economic Investment Committee, the release said. The state estimated the project would grow its economy by $1.38 billion over the course of the 12-year term of the grant.
“As a proud community supporter, Publix is excited to create hundreds of new employment opportunities and to help provide for greater economic prosperity in Guilford County,” said Publix CEO and President Todd Jones in the statement.
Publix currently has 1,191 store locations and nine distribution centers.
