Offering fresher, more localized foods, independent grocers can thrive against the dominant, nationwide chains of the day. Progressive Grocer has honored 18 “small but mighty” independent retailers in its latest “Outstanding Independents Awards.”

The awards are a February issue tradition, honoring small retailers in categories such as best single store operation and multistore operation, as well as looking at store departments, like which retailers earn top marks in bakery, produce and meat. The awards also recognize retailers for sustainability initiatives, security, health and wellness, and more.

This year’s winners included Oneota Community Food Co-op in Decorah, Iowa (best single store); Woodlands Market Kentfield, Calif. (best multistore); Compare Foods, Charlotte, N.C. (best ethnic); Palmer’s Market, Darien, Conn. (best prepared foods); and many more winners.
