Fueled by its low-price private label selection, discount retailer Aldi is seeing visits rise nationwide, according to new analysis from data firm Placer.ai.

Overall visits to Aldi increased by 30.8% between Q4 2019 and Q4 2022, which has coincided with the chain’s rapid expansion of stores, now at more than 2,240 stores across 38 states. The average number of visits to each of its stores has also increased by 9.3% over the past three years.

The states with the largest share of Aldi’s visits as of January 2023 were Illinois (10.2%) and Florida (10.2%), followed by Pennsylvania (7.4%), New York (6.1%) and Ohio (6.5%).

In California, the nation’s largest state, Aldi is giving the Emeryville, Calif.-based Grocery Outlet a run for its money as consumers increasingly look to save money on groceries. The two chains have experienced near-uniform positive foot traffic growth since August 2022, both year-over-year (YoY) and year-over-three-year (Yo3Y).

Over the past six months, Aldi has outpaced its 2019/2020 visits dramatically, peaking at a 41.7% increase in August 2022 and a 40% increase in November 2022.

“Aldi’s basic formula – an unadorned shopping experience that provides quality goods without the fuss – has propelled the chain into the U.S. grocery stratosphere in recent years,” wrote Placer.ai’s Lila Margalit. “And as surging food prices lead families across the country to tighten their belts, Aldi – alongside other value grocers like Grocery Outlet – appears poised for continued growth.”
