Madison Foods joins Wakefern Food’s cooperative

Wakefern Food’s cooperative has a new member. Family-owned Madison Foods, a Boston-area grocer, is the latest to join the Keasbey, N.J.-based company’s roster, with plans to convert three of its Save A Lot stores to Wakefern’s Price Rite Marketplace banner. 

The company said that the converted stores in Roslindale, Roxbury and Brockton will continue to feature shoppers’ favorites, as well as new exclusive brands alongside new circulars with special deals at the renovated locations. 

Madison Foods is owned and operated by the Slawsby family — Todd, Harold and Jonathan — which has been operating grocery stores in the area since the 1940s, when Ben Slawsby opened a meat market in Dorchester that eventually became a 10-store chain Capitol Foods. 

“We will continue to provide all the things our customers know and love while adding more variety and award-winning store brands that the Wakefern cooperative offers,” said Todd Slawsby, president of Madison Foods.  “This is the exciting next chapter in my family’s history in the grocery business. I want to thank shoppers for their support and patience as we undertake rebranding efforts and make the change to Price Rite Marketplace.”

Wakefern said that the new Price Rite Marketplace stores would offer its Bowl & Basket and Paperbird lines, as well as its revamped Whole Pantry-brand products, which include the Wholesome Pantry Organic line.
