Lidl will be closing stores in four eastern markets, in each instance citing underperformance as the reason the locations are being shuttered.

Media reports indicated the stores in North Augusta, S.C.; Howell, N.J.; Charlottesville, Va.; and Thomasville, N.C. will each soon shut their doors.

According to a report from WRDW/WAGT, the North Augusta store at 417 East Martintown Road will close on July 16. A company spokesperson told WRDW/WAGT the store is underperforming and the company made a “strategic decision” to close the location and focus on those that are seeing significant growth.

The stores in Howell, Charlottesville, and Thomasville are also locking their doors for the last time on July 16. Underperformance at each was also cited as the reason for the trio of stores closing.

Local media in central New Jersey noted that while the store in Howell is being closed, a new Lidl location in nearby Freehold is slated to open soon.

According to Progressive Grocer’s’ The PG 100 annual report, Lidl as of May had 177 stores along the east coast of the U.S. The discount grocer recently celebrated grand openings in Greensboro, N.C.; and Washington, D.C.
