JCPenney is looking to put money back in the pockets of its shoppers and has launched a new rewards program to achieve that goal.

The department store retailer has unveiled its JCPenney Rewards and Credit Program, which is free to consumers and, in the estimation of company officials, has the potential of putting $500 million back into the pockets of its customers.

According to JCPenney officials, more than 20 million rewards members consistently shop the retailer an average of five times per year. To make customers feel rewarded, the new program will double the rate at which rewards members earn points, ensuring that every member gets some amount of money back annually.

“We want every trip to JCPenney to be worth it,” said Katie Mullen, chief customer officer with JCPenney. “We want it to be easier to take advantage of our rewards, easier to reach rewards milestones, and to make it a sure thing that every member sees rewards each year.”

Mullen said the Rewards Program was not designed for a specific group of shoppers, but developed to be accessible to all.

“We have customers across all demographics and we really wanted to make sure that everyone could participate,” she said. “We’ve made the program easy to join and made a commitment to keep the program free.”

Mullen also noted JCPenney has no plans to utilize its Rewards Program to entice shoppers to purchase the retailer’s broad assortment of private label products.

“One of the things we’re really focused on is to allow the customer to shop the way they want to shop,” she said. “Even though we obviously love our private label products, it’s not our intention to use (the Rewards Program) to enhance discounting on one type of product over another.”

The key aspects of the Rewards Program include:

  • Get More. JCPenney’s Rewards Program is free to join, guarantees $20 in CashPass Rewards and allows rewards to be stacked on top of other coupons and can be used on any purchase.
  • Earn More. Customers who join JCPenney’s Rewards program will reach rewards up to two times faster, earning at least one CashPass point per $1 spent and receiving a $10 CashPass Reward when they hit $200. JCPenney has also standardized its Rewards Program, offering members incentives including a $10 CashPass Reward just for joining and another $10 CashPass Reward on their birthday.
  • Save More. Customers who are JCPenney cardholders will save even more, getting JCPenney’s Best Price Guarantee and earning CashPass Rewards 50% faster than ever before when using a JCPenney Credit Card for purchases. Cardholders will earn 1.5 CashPass points per $1 spent, receive a $10 CashPass Reward when they spend $133, and enjoy an extra 35% off their first purchase with their JCPenney Credit Card.

JCPenney is also offering opportunities to unlock additional savings and earn even more rewards, including the chance to meet NBA legend and JCPenney brand ambassador, Shaquille O’Neal.

On May 4, shoppers who visit their preferred JCPenney location between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. local time, sign up for Rewards or show their Rewards status and takes O’Neal’s challenge to score a three-point basket into a shopping cart will receive a mystery coupon worth at least $10 and up to $100 off, while supplies last.

Rewards members are also invited to film their attempt to shoot a three-point basket and share it on social with #JCPRewards for the chance to be the one lucky fan selected to meet Shaq in-person and show off their three-point skills later in the year.
