IKEA U.S. Expanding Smaller Format Stores
Best known for its large stores offering consumers a host of home furnishings, IKEA U.S. will expand its new store format in 2025 as the retailer evolves to meet the needs of shoppers.
The retailer will continue its expansion with the opening of eight new locations including seven new Plan & order points with Pick-up in Cherry Hill, Pa.; Hunt Valley, Md.; Beaverton, Ore.; Scottsdale, Ariz.; and three locations in California – Thousand Oaks, Ontario, and Colma – as well as one pick-up point in Santa Monica.
The new locations are scheduled to open in the spring/summer.
“Our strategy continues to prioritize our customer’s needs, and in FY24, we continued to make everyday living more accessible, especially during a time when we know economic challenges are leading to a decrease in disposable income for many Americans,” said Javier Quiñones, CEO and chief sustainability officer for IKEA U.S. “As we gear up for the 40th anniversary of IKEA U.S. in 2025, we’re committed to reaching even more customers where they are.”
Plan & order points with Pick-up are one of many new format stores in the IKEA U.S growth strategy. The format differs from the traditional large-format IKEA stores, allowing customers to meet with the IKEA store team to plan and order home furnishing solutions that require a bit more help – such as kitchen, bathroom, and closet storage systems. With the addition of the IKEA Pick-up point, customers will be able to collect their purchases when and where it’s convenient for them.
In 2024, IKEA U.S. opened eight new Plan & order points in addition to the existing 39 pick-up points and 21,000 FedEx collection points across the country. The retailer also opened the first small format store in Rockwall, Tex., the third IKEA location in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
The home furnishings retailer’s ongoing efforts to expand its footprint follows a year in which IKEA U.S. reported $5.5 billion in sales and $1.9 billion in e-commerce sales. Over the past five years, the company has increased its market share by 13.6%.
