Giant Eagle’s GetGo convenience store offers cashierless shopping

Giant Eagle and its GetGo Cafe + Market in Fox Chapel, Pa., has unveiled a cashierless checkout system through a platform developed by Grabango.

Shoppers with the Grabango mobile app (found in the Apple and Google Play stores) can walk into the store with no check-in feature required or no need to scan a way into the store. The shopper shops normally and items are accounted for automatically into the app through machine learning technology and computer vision sensors. When checking out, the shopper scans a code on their phone at a scanning station to trigger payment and receive a digital receipt.

“We’re excited to bring checkout-free technology to our Pittsburgh area shoppers. With Grabango, our GetGo guests are able to get in, get out and get going even faster with a more convenient, contactless, shopping experience,” said Laura Karet, president and CEO of Giant Eagle Inc. “We look forward to success at our Fox Chapel GetGo and to rolling out more Grabango-powered convenience and grocery stores in the near future."

Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle first piloted a Grabango effort in 2019 at a Giant Eagle store, and this GetGo location marks the first retailer to launch a commercial service with Grabango. The GetGo locations are on the smaller end of the Giant Eagle stores, around 3,000 square feet, and are more convenience focused with in-and-out shopping and prepared items.

The store's do carry private label lines like Giant Eagle water and more.

Grabango’s system is retrofitted to fit the existing location, not requiring a store to overhaul a location to make the technology to work and operates with the preexisting planogram and merchandise mix of the store.

"Together, Giant Eagle, GetGo and Grabango are offering new levels of convenience by solving everyone's no. 1 frustration — waiting in checkout lines," said Will Glaser, CEO of Grabango. "Checkout-free convenience has arrived, and we’re so proud to be offering it with Giant Eagle; they're a fantastic partner.”

Glaser founded the company in 2016. He’s also a co-founder of Pandora Media.
