The Fresh Market Dijon Mustard

A dollop of mustard adds a little zing to foods ranging from sandwiches to potato salad. And many sandwich and salad lovers believe that Dijon mustard — which traces its roots back to a recipe a man named Jean Naigeon created in Dijon, France, in the 1800s — offers a bold bite that American-style yellow mustard just can't match.

This month, we asked our new team of Test Drive panelists — Jenny, Frank and Tony — to sample The Fresh Market Dijon Mustard, a new offering from the Greensboro, N.C.-based retailer with the same name as its store brand. We purchased the mustards for $3.39 each at a Chicago-area store.

Product Comments

Jenny: The flavor was excellent! Tasted with a soft pretzel and went back for seconds because of the smooth, rich flavor.

Frank: Having mostly used yellow mustard, I found Dijon mustard a delightful change. The ingredients are well-balanced, giving the mustard a taste that is not too sharp or spicy. I've used it on various sandwiches.

Tony: I put the mustard on a burger with bacon and bleu cheese crumbles on a sourdough bun. Very nice flavor; not overpowering.

Packaging Comments

Jenny: The package was great — had a vintage feel and reminded me of something you would see in a boutique store.

Frank: The design and color of the label attract your attention to the mustard jar. The label was just the right size, allowing a very good view of [the jar's] contents while including the ingredients in easy-to-read printing.

Tony: The label is simple … nice and feels almost boutique or small batch. Doesn't look/feel like a major brand, and I might expect to see it in a gourmet store. Package size is as expected for a gourmet mustard product.

Note: Test Drive delivers honest, yet totally unscientific feedback on a new store brand product and its packaging each month. Our panelists give a green light to items/packaging they like a great deal; a yellow light to items/packaging they deem "acceptable;" and a red light to items/packaging not meeting their expectations.
