Fortune magazine and Great Places to Work have named Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans Food Markets as the best retail workplace for the second year in a row, while Tulsa, Okla.-based QuikTrip convenience store chain is ranked No. 2.
Other food retailers listed in the top 20 list of retail workplaces include Lakeland, Fla.-based Publix Super Markets, ranked third; Woodland, Calif.-headquartered Nugget Markets, ranked sixth; Altoona, Pa.-based Sheetz Inc., ranked seventh; and Amazon-owned Whole Foods Market, Austin, Texas, in 20th place.
“Wegmans is genuinely welcoming to a diverse population of employees. It makes a concerted effort to employ older workers, which is refreshing,” wrote one employee quoted in the Fortune article “The 20 Best Workplaces in Retail.”
QuikTrip also earned kudos from its staff, such as this comment in the Fortune article: “The company is constantly asking the employees how to improve the stores and makes changes based on the feedback."
