FDA, WS Packaging to host webinar on nutritional labeling changes

The FDA and Green Bay, Wis.-based WS Packaging Group Inc. are hosting a free webinar on Sept. 27 to explain the upcoming changes in nutritional labeling and how companies affected by the new laws can update their packaging easily to avoid costly delays. The 30-minute webinar, titled “Master the Coming Changes in Nutritional Labeling,” will be held at 3 p.m. EDT, according to WS Packaging.

The webinar will address why nutritional labels are changing; specific label changes, including new double- and triple-column designs; change timelines; WS Packaging’s capabilities; and DesignMax as a tool to make “seamless and trouble-free” changes in labeling, the company said.

The FDA announced in May that a new Nutrition Facts label will be required for packaged food to make it easier for consumers to make informed food choices based on the latest scientific information. Manufacturers with at least $10 million in annual food sales will be required to use the new label by July 26, 2018, while other food manufacturers will have an additional year to comply. The mandated changes are the most significant since the inception of nutritional labeling more than 20 years ago and will affect the packaging layouts of most food products.

“The new guidelines in sizing, layout and content will require a systematic review of the entire package without impacting branding and differentiating graphics,” said Charlie Eitel, CEO of WS Packaging. “We’re thrilled to partner with the FDA to bring this important information to manufacturers affected by the changes.”
