Dollar General plans to greatly expand its retail footprint this year. The company said it plans to open 1,110 new stores in 2022, including 100 new pOpshelf stores and new DG Fresh distribution centers.
First covered by Store Brands’ sister publication Progressive Grocer, Dollar General’s planned expansion is expected to create about 10,000 new jobs in fiscal 2022, a 6% growth in the company’s workforce. In addition to the pOpshelf locations and DG Fresh distribution centers, the company plans to expand into Mexico with 10 Dollar General locations.

In the most recent quarterly report, net sales increased 3.9% to $8.5 billion in the quarter compared to $8.2 billion in the Q3 of 2020, driven by new stores, which partially offset the decline in same-store sales. Same-store sales decreased 0.6% compared to the third quarter of 2020, driven by a decline in customer traffic, partially offset by an increase in average transaction amount.
Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based Dollar General is No. 15 on The PG 100, Progressive Grocer’s 2021 list of the top food and consumables retailers in North America. Dollar General was named Progressive Grocer’s Retailer of the Year in 2021.
