As Dollar General expands its selection of fresh products at stores across the country, it also is expanding its distribution network.
The discounter is now moving forward with construction on a new distribution center in North Little Rock, Ark. to help facilitate the movement of fresh foods to stores in the region.
According to a report in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, the 1.2 million-square-foot distribution center will be located on U.S. 70 near the Arkansas River. Scheduled to open in April, the facility’s neighbors will include distribution centers from Lowe’s and Amazon.
The retailer has expanded its selection of grocery items in recent years and has put the growth of fresh food squarely on its radar. Its current plans call for selling fresh fruit and vegetables at 5,000 stores by the end of January. Currently Dollar General operates more than 19,000 stores.
Recently, Dollar General's efforts to boost its assortment of food was seen with the debut of more than 100 products to its Clover Valley private brand. The new items include a selection of sauces, condiments, entrees, sides, and snacks at affordable price points.
Introduced in 2009, the brand has expanded over the years and now includes approximately 600 items.
