Brookshire's launches two sustainable store brand tuna varieties

4/13/2016

Tyler, Texas-based Brookshire Grocery Co. said it launched two sustainable tuna varieties under its Brookshire’s brand.  Albacore (solid white) is available in a 5-ounce can, and Skipjack (chunk light) is available in 12-ounce and 5-ounce sizes.

Brookshire’s skipjack tuna is caught without the use of a fish aggregating device, which can negatively impact other marine wildlife, while Brookshire’s Albacore Tuna is certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council.  Both fishing methods support ocean conservation and environmental stewardship.  Brookshire has many practices that help the environment, and offering tuna that is harvested with sustainable fishing practices continues the tradition of conservation and sustainability, the retailer said.

Brookshire’s tuna supplier, Tri Marine, has practiced sustainable fishing for some time and was a founding member of the International Sustainable Seafood Foundation. Tri Marine has its own fishing fleet and large scale processing facilities, so they can confidently trace their tuna products from catch to shelf.  Brookshire’s tuna is a product of the United States of America, the retailer added.

Brookshire’s albacore and skipjack tuna join a list of more than 1,900 products that are packaged with the Brookshire’s label and are available in all Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods and FRESH by Brookshire’s stores in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas, the retailer stated.
