Bon Appétit highlights H-E-B’s store brand tortillas
Texas retailer H-E-B’s store brand tortillas have gained notoriety from a leading cooking magazine. As part of Bon Appétit’s “Taco Nation” March cover story, writer Alex Beggs waxed nostalgic about the retailer’s tortillas, calling them “the best supermarket-brand tortilla out there, easy.”
The article outlines the company’s process for making the tortillas, which entail having tortilla machines in almost all of its stores to make five flavors. Part of what makes the tortillas so good, the writer says, is their imperfections that give them a homemade aura.
“So the greatness, the mystique, the glory of the H-E-B flour tortilla has only grown in my memory the longer I’ve been away from Texas, in the way nostalgia can delude us,” the article says. “But the H-E-B flour tortilla is still the best supermarket-brand tortilla out there, easy. My love for them has not faded.”
