Wawa Building Travel Center In North Carolina
As convenience store chain Wawa continues expanding its footprint in the eastern portion of the U.S., it is also testing a new, larger store concept.
The retailer’s new prototype store, considered a travel center, is currently under construction on I-95 and Chickenfoot Road in Hope Mills, N.C., just south of Fayetteville. When completed, the store will be about 8,400 square feet, larger than Wawa’s typical store, which is between 5,500 and 6,000 square feet. News of the new prototype store, which is expected to open by the middle of 2025, was reported by the Courier Post.
A statement from Wawa said the new store will offer a high-speed diesel fuel court for professional tractor-trailer drivers along with “well-appointed” restrooms and a pet relief area.
News of the convenience store chain’s new prototype store comes as it also expands into Central Pennsylvania, a region of the commonwealth that has long been home to convenience store chains Sheetz and Rutter’s. The first of several new Wawa stores planned for this area of Pennsylvania recently opened at 1601 West Harrisburg Pike in Middletown.
By the end of 2024, Wawa will have new stores in York, Dover, Hanover, and Enola, with plans to open up to 40 stores in the region over the next five years.
