According to Numerator, 21% of total grocery dollars were spent at Walmart over a 12 month period ending June 30.

Walmart remains the top retailer for consumers shopping for groceries in the U.S., according to new data from Numerator, but the nation’s two largest warehouse club chains continue to gain dollar share as shoppers seek greater value.

For the 12 months ending June 30, Walmart accounted for 21% of total grocery dollars in the U.S., down slightly from 21.2% in the comparable 12-month period the prior year. Costco, which ranks third on Numerator’s Top 20, accounted for 8.4% of total grocery dollars, up from 7.9% in 2024 and 7.6% in 2023. In fact, Costco’s figures are nearly even with Kroger, which sits in second place at 8.5%.

Walmart-owned Sam’s Club, which sits at No. 7 on Numerator’s list, accounted for 4% of total grocery dollars over the same 12-month period, up from 3.8% in 2024 and 2023.

Two of the nation’s largest traditional grocers, Kroger and Albertsons, continue to see their respective share of grocery dollars decline. Kroger’s dollar share has dropped over the past three years, down from 9.1% in 2023 and 8.9% in 2024 to 8.5% in 2025. Albertsons has seen its share fall from 5.2% in 2023 to 5% in 2024 and to 4.9% this year.

Small-format grocers Aldi and Trader Joe’s saw little movement in their respective share of U.S. grocery dollars. Aldi’s 2.8% is equal to that of 2024, and Trader Joe’s 1.5% is up slightly over its 1.4% in 2024.
