Three Dog Bakery earns GFSI certification

Kansas City, Mo.-based Three Dog Bakery, a manufacturer of premium, all-natural dog food and treats under its eponymous brand and retailers’ own brands, said it earned BRC certification, a highly regarded management scheme recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) board. The designation indicates that the company’s manufacturing meets internationally recognized food safety standards. The certification has propelled Three Dog Bakery to new growth and opened doors for further business expansion. Since earning the certification, Three Dog Bakery has resumed in-house production for several previously co-packed treats, begun private label production for current customers, and earned new international business in the United Kingdom with Pets at Home. 

GFSI was created to provide leadership and guidance on food safety management systems for the food supply chain. BRC is a leading safety and quality certification program for food manufacturing, packaging, storage and distribution and is used by more than 22,000 certified suppliers in 123 countries, the company said.

GFSI objectives include reducing food safety risks by delivering equivalence and convergence between effective food safety management systems. Additionally, it aids cost management in the global food system by eliminating redundancy and improving operational efficiency, developing competencies and capacity building in food safety to create consistent and effective global food systems, and providing a unique international stakeholder platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange and networking, Three Dog Bakery added.

According to Three Dog Bakery President Scott Ragan, such certification is one of the most stringent in the pet food industry.
