Store brands lead reasons ‘Texans love H-E-B’

1/19/2017

In a blog posted Jan. 18 on Paste.com, a trendy cultural news site, Austin, Texas-based Ashley Blom, originally a New Englander, lists “9 Reasons Why Texans Love H-E-B.” Ranked No. 1 on this list was “Local Food, Quality Store Brands.”

“You’ll be hard-pressed to find any store with a stronger dedication to locally sourced food,” she wrote. “The H-E-B brand shrimp are straight from the Gulf via Bowers Shrimp Farm in Galveston. The H-E-B-branded corn products (like corn chips) are made from corn grown in the fields of the Hondo Corn Farm in Hondo, Texas, and H-E-B’s MooTopia milk is even produced in Texas through H-E-B’s own dairy farms in San Antonio.”

For No. 2 on her list, Blom continued raving about H-E-B’s store brands. “Most supermarket store brands have the feeling of being subpar or boringly generic, but H-E-B takes value shopping to a whole new level with their own store brands and shatters that presumption,” she wrote, noting later that the company's store brand’s slogan is “Made for the love of Texans.”

She mentions store brands again in reason No. 3, “Great Organic and Special Diet Sections,” noting that “H-E-B’s organics brand is USDA Certified Organic, with everything from fresh produce and meat to packaged snacks.”

The other reasons the author likes the San Antonio-based chain are an abundance of free samples, meal deals and coupons, and in-store events, as well as H-E-B’s deep understanding of the needs of particular neighborhoods, a great beer and wine selection (including own brands) and the expanded choices provided the retailer’s other banners such as H-E-B Plus and Mi Tienda.
