On Jan. 10, Keasbey, N.J.-based ShopRite will begin its annual Can Can sale tradition. Originally intended to focus customers on its private label products, the Can Can sale has evolved to include national brands as well. In addition to canned goods, the retailer said it will include pasta, sauce, cereal, coffee, paper products and other items in the sale at heavily discounted prices.
ShopRite considered canceling the sale just once, in 1974, due to an industrywide shortage of canned goods, but stores decided the sale was too important to customers to halt. The retailer said it estimates that more than 3 billion canned items have been sold since the sale's inception in 1971.
