Dr. Scott Gottlieb, who served as the 23rd commissioner of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) from 2017-2019, will deliver the keynote for the opening breakfast at the Private Label Manufacturer Association’s (PLMA) 2019 Private Label Trade Show on Monday, Nov. 18.

Gottlieb, a physician, resigned from his post in March to spend more time with his family, and said he was “walking away from the best job I’ll ever have.”

While in office, Gottlieb gained a reputation among Democrats and Republicans for his collaborative management style and for being an effective advocate of public health. During his tenure, he aimed to more tightly regulate electronic cigarettes, saying that vaping had reach "an epidemic proportion” among teenagers. Gottlieb also made generic drugs more accessible.

Under his leadership, the FDA advanced new frameworks for the modern and safe and effective oversight of gene therapies, cell-based regenerative medicines, targeted drugs and digital health devices. The agency also promoted policies to reduce death and disease from tobacco, improve food innovation and safety, and aggressively confront addiction crises.

Gottlieb has been published in leading medical journals and periodicals, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. He has held editorial positions on the British Medical Journal and the Journal of the American Medical Association and appears regularly as a guest commentator on CNBC. Fortune Magazine recognized him as one of the “World’s 50 Greatest Leaders” in 2018 and again in 2019.

In other show news, Chieh Huang, co-founder and CEO of Boxed, will not be speaking at the show because of a conflict. Huang had been scheduled to speak at the opening breakfast.

The Private Label Trade Show is set for Nov. 17-19 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill. The show will present more than 2,500 exhibit booths from the best store brands manufacturers of every size and description, while more than 5,000 visitors to the PLMA will include buyers and executives from U.S. supermarkets, mass merchandisers, drug chains, discount, club, convenience and dollar stores, in addition to online and specialty retailers, foodservice distributors and wholesalers.
