Report: Kroger, Albertsons Talking Deal

A Wall Street Journal report indicated the two companies are in discussion over a deal that would create a national grocery giant.

Kroger is in discussion with Albertsons over a possible deal that would bring together two of the nation's largest grocers, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. 

The report indicated that something could be announced as soon as this week. Neither Kroger or Albertsons immediately responded to requests for comment from Store Brands

Headquartered in Cincinnati, Kroger operates more than 2,700 grocery retail stores under more than two dozen titles in four formats; supermarkets, multi-department stores, price-impact warehouse stores and marketplace stores. The company at the end of its fiscal year 2021 had total sales of $137.9 billion.

Boise, ID-based Albertsons operates more than 2,200 stores in 34 states across the U.S. and the District of Columbia. Fiscal year 2021 total sales were $71.9 billion.
