Report: Consumers choosing retailers based on store brands

5/2/2019
Trader Joe's earned high praise for its store brands.

Many shoppers are choosing stores specifically because of their private brands, according to new research from Consumer Reports (CR).

When CR surveyed its members about the grocery stores they liked best, three grocers earned top marks for their store brands: Monrovia, Calif.-based Trader Joe's; Issaquah, Wash.-based Costco; and San Antonio, Texas-based Central Market, a subsidiary of the privately owned H-E-B supermarket chain.

"There are things you can only get in these stores — you can’t get them in other places," said Consumer Reports' Toby Stanger. "And people are very loyal to that kind of product."

The Signature Select store brand from Albertsons Companies and The Kroger Co.’s  private brands ranked in the middle of the Consumer Reports survey. Walmart's Great Value brand was not a favorite.
