A recall of possibly Salmonella-contaminated milk powder manufactured by Strasburg, Va.-based Valley Milk Products LLC has set off a chain reaction of voluntary recalls of products containing that ingredient, which is used in confectionary coatings. Sioux City, Iowa-headquartered Palmer Candy Co., for one, is recalling 22 SKUs. The company makes private label chocolates for retail distribution and bulk products for retailers to repackage.
The recalled items include Chocolate Almond Bark, Christmas Tree Pretzels, Cookies & Cream Bark, Drizzle Peanut Brittle, Game Day Party Bowl, Peppermint Pretzels, and other SKUs.
“We are truly sorry for any distress this recall causes to our retail customers and to consumers,” said Marty Palmer, president and CEO of Palmer Candy, in a statement. “We remain committed to the highest standards in food quality and safety. We are taking this recall very seriously and truly appreciate the cooperation of our customers as we work to resolve this matter promptly.”
West Des Moines, Iowa-based Hy-Vee Inc. is among the retailers recalling some of its Palmer-manufactured store brand candy. Most of the recalled products are holiday-themed items.
