1010data Market Insights, a New York-based data management company, reports new data stating that the online grocery delivery industry has grown 55 percent since 2014.
Analyzing data from FreshDirect, Instacart, Peapod and AmazonFresh from January through October, 1010data Market Insights found that FreshDirect, an online grocer that delivers to residences and offices in the New York City metropolitan area, generates nearly half of all sales.
While Seattle-based AmazonFresh represents only 9 percent of sales, the company recently announced plans to expand the service to new cities. Despite being one of the newest players in the category, San Francisco-based Instacart accounts for 21 percent of sales.
While FreshDirect commands most of the revenue generated, it has experienced the least amount of growth year over year (YOY), according to 1010data. FreshDirect and Peapod sales increased 7 percent YOY while Instacart has nearly doubled in size (77 percent growth YOY) and AmazonFresh experienced 43 percent YOY growth.
California or New York holds the top spot for sales across all grocery delivery series, according to the report. Although New York is among the top sites for every delivery service, FreshDirect accounts for 88 percent of sales there. California accounts for 45 percent and 29 percent of sales at AmazonFresh and Instacart.
