MOM’s to Open Bryn Mawr, Pa., Store

MOM’s Organic Grocer will open a store in Bryn Mawr, Pa., on Friday, Feb. 21, with festivities extending through the weekend. The Philadelphia-area location is the Rockville, Md.-based company’s first outside of the D.C./Baltimore region, where it operates 10 stores.

“I started MOM’s in 1987 out of my mother’s garage, and we are still 100 percent family-owned and –operated,” said CEO Scott Nash. “MOM’s purpose is to protect and restore the environment. We are passionate environmentalists -- and passionate about organic farming/products.”

Confidence to Expand

Of the Bryn Mawr location, Nash said last September, when its impending opening was first revealed: “If this store is successful, it will be pivotal in giving us the confidence to expand throughout the region, and possibly further into the Northeast.”

According to Nash, MOM’s is the only grocery chain in the United States to stop selling bottled water and was the first U.S. grocery chain to eliminate plastic grocery bags; carries only sustainable seafood (even the canned tuna); uses 100 percent compostable reusable grocery bags, bulk/produce pages, cups, plates and eating utensils; purchases wind power and renewable energy credits to offset 100 percent of its electricity; and offers free electric-car charging (right) and recycling drop-offs for shoppers, among other green initiatives.
