India’s online grocer BigBasket to expand private brand offerings
In India, the private label segment of online retailing is expected to triple in sales to $5 billion (U.S. dollars) in 2017, according to a Dec. 26 article on Business-Standard.com, a major Indian business news website. An earlier article posted on Livemint.com, another Indian financial news site, noted the robust expansion plans of online grocer BigBasket.com, which plans to extend its private brand offerings to non-food categories and offer more SKUs under its existing private label lines.
As part of the expansion, BigBasket has developed private label wet wipes and disposable bags as well as other items. The company currently offers the following own brands: Fresho vegetables, fruit, meat and bakery products; Royal tea, cereal and other staple products; Tasties snacks; Fresho Signature cookies, dehydrated fruit and exotic baked goods; and HappyChef condiments and ready-to-eat products.
Run by Bangalore, Karnataka-based Supermarket Grocery Supplies Pvt. Ltd., BigBasket is “the best funded home-grown online grocer with $220 million in funds” from several investors, according to the Livemint article.
