Giant-Carlisle, a Pennsylvania-based division of Ahold USA, has completed its acquisition of 15 Genuardi’s Family Markets stores in the greater Philadelphia area. Genuardi’s is a subsidiary of Pleasanton, Calif.-based Safeway.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) approved the acquisition last month. Giant first made the purchase agreement public in early January 2012.
Under the terms of a consent order approved by the FTC, the Genuardi’s location in Newtown, Pa., must be sold to an unrelated third party. The store will be bought by Newtown Market LLC and operated as a McCaffrey’s supermarket.
Giant has offered employment to 1,700 former Genuardi’s store associates -- almost all who applied for employment with Giant at the stores the banner has purchased. The chain also plans to hire about 900 additional part-time workers for its new stores.
Dates for each store conversion have not yet been disclosed.
