Delivery platform DoorDash has announced that it will begin accepting SNAP/EBT payments on the platform for a number of major retailers.
Starting in July, shoppers can use their benefits to order online at Aldi, Albertsons, Safeway, Meijer and participating 7-Eleven stores, bringing the total number of SNAP-friendly locations on the platform to more than 4,000. A recent report from 84.51° showed that 34% of consumers it surveyed purchased more private label products since the SNAP Emergency Allotment (EA) COVID-19 related benefits were canceled.
“The rise of on-demand grocery delivery has had a transformational impact on food access. This is especially true for vulnerable populations, including seniors, people living in food deserts, and those facing disability or transportation barriers,” said Fuad Hannon, VP of New Verticals at DoorDash. “We’re proud to partner with these merchants to offer SNAP recipients access to quality groceries conveniently through our platform. Through the power of local delivery, enabling SNAP/EBT payments can make a profound impact on reducing food insecurity and connecting people to groceries and the essential items they need.”
In the coming days, customers can order SNAP/EBT-eligible grocery items on DoorDash at the following merchants:
- Aldi – Starting in July, customers can access and purchase SNAP-eligible grocery products from over 2,200 Aldi locations across 38 states.
- Albertsons and Safeway – Starting in July, customers can order from DoorDash SNAP-eligible items at nearly 900 Safeway and 380 Albertsons locations nationwide.
- Meijer – Starting in July, customers can access fresh groceries from over 260 Meijer locations.
- 7-Eleven – Starting in July, customers can order delivery from over 130 7-Eleven stores across the U.S. for a variety of convenience items, food and beverages.
DoorDash will offer SNAP recipients all the benefits of a DashPass membership free for two months, allowing them to place orders with no delivery fee on eligible orders.
Consumers can add a SNAP/EBT card directly to the payment method section of the DoorDash app, under ‘Program Cards.’ Once their card is added, they’ll receive an email with a unique link to redeem their free DashPass membership for two months with a few clicks and start saving.
“The Alliance to End Hunger is happy to see DoorDash expand its offerings with the inclusion of SNAP recipients,” said Eric Mitchell, executive director of Alliance to End Hunger. “A key issue to ensure food security across the country is improved access, and DoorDash is taking a positive and commonsense step in today’s tech-friendly world."
