“Dollar General was a welcome reprieve from the mayhem of Dollar Tree."

Chesapeake, Va.-based Dollar Tree and Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based Dollar General are practically indistinguishable when it comes to store count and annual sales. So what gives Dollar General the marginal edge over Dollar Tree?

Business Insider, a business news website, visited one of each of the two discount stores and determined that not only does the difference lay with store cleanliness, but pricing as well.

Although it was confirmed that Dollar Tree was cheaper overall in pricing, with almost every item costing $1, its low-priced set backs showed in one of the company’s Jersey City, N.J., locations with how disastrous and poorly kept the store was during that time.

The store (Dollar Tree) was a disaster to navigate and featured dozens of boxes lining almost every aisle,” reported Shoshy Ciment, a retail fellow at Business Insider. “Dollar General was a welcome reprieve from the mayhem of Dollar Tree. And though not all of the items there went for $1, Dollar General was the better store by a longshot.”
