Dollar stores are bringing in more discounted grocery items to keep pace with traditional supermarkets, according to an article by Store Brands’ sister publication, Progressive Grocer.

According to the article, Chesapeake, Va.-based Dollar Tree is making more room for its freezer and cooler sections within its newly updated Family Dollar stores and has added adult beverages to its shelves as well.

Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based Dollar General is trying to add more fresh foods to its stores, as well as expanding its refrigerated goods such as dairy and deli.

“While it’s still early, we’re already successfully reducing product cost on these types of items,” said Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos during the company’s recent first quarter earnings call. “We believe that we continue to scale DG Fresh, it will … meaningfully improve our gross margin.”
