Digimarc honored for German discounter's private brand packaging

Digimarc’s work with a German discounter’s private brand packaging has earned it recognition.

The Beaverton, Ore.-based maker of the Digimarc Platform won the EuroShop Top Supplier Retail 2020 award from the EHI Retail Institute for adding its Digimarc Barcode — a barcode that is integrated into a product’s packaging artwork — to Netto Marken Discount’s private brand products. Netto also received the Retail Technology Awards Europe honor for Best Instore Solution for its connected packaging, which is powered by the Digimarc Platform.

"Netto takes pride in being a retail pioneer throughout Europe by using Digimarc Barcode and driving this efficient technology forward," Christina Stylianou, Netto head of corporate communications. "With this innovation, we enable our colleagues to carry out a faster and easier checkout process."

The Digimarc Barcode is designed to be an imperceptible part of a product’s packaging that is repeated and thus able to be scanned from any angle, which the company said increases checkout speed and accuracy. Netto currently has more than 2,000 items on its shelves with the Digimarc Barcode, which it plans to bring to all of its private label products. Netto’s connected packaging combines the Digimarc Barcode, its package design and its point-of-sale hardware to detect the barcodes.

"To be recognized by the EHI Retail Institute is a significant endorsement of the Digimarc Platform's tangible benefit to retailers," said Claudius Jaeger, European sales director for Digimarc. "Netto is a dynamic, innovative retailer that is continually looking to improve the shopper experience. We congratulate them on their recognition."
