DG Home Dish Liquid With Bleach Alternative

DG Home Dish Liquid with Bleach Alternative

Few people actually enjoy washing dishes, but a product that cuts through grease and reduces the amount of scrubbing required at least makes the job a bit more pleasant. The new DG Home Dish Liquid with Bleach Alternative from Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based Dollar General promises to do just that — while treating designated dishwashers to a ruby red grapefruit scent at the same time.

We purchased three 25-ounce bottles of this product for $ 1.00 apiece at a Chicago-area Dollar General store. Then we asked our panelists — including our "newbie," Cynthia — to roll up their sleeves and put this value-priced product to the test on a sink's worth of dirty pots, pans and dishes.

Product Comments

Cynthia: The product says it contains a bleach alternative. I didn't get that when testing. The label says "ruby red grapefruit scent." I also didn't find there to be any grapefruit scent. The performance was poor. I like my dishwashing liquid to have lasting bubbles; this product did not.

Geoff: As expected for a dollar [-priced] liquid soap, the suds did not last as long, and the grease-cutting power faded earlier than the commercial brand I normally use. When I used a little extra, it held up better. For the price, it is fine.

Viada: The scent is not too strong, but pleasant. It is really easy to use; it foams up nicely. I didn't find any issues with performance of the product, and it has a nice coloring.

Packaging Comments

Cynthia: The packaging definitely is a generic product by the appearance. Nothing fancy with the label and logo.

Geoff: The general appearance is fine. Clear bottle allows one to see the colored soap inside.

Viada: I like the graphic. I think that the name of the product, the name of the brand, its advantages and scent stand out very well. The warning and ingredients on the back are clear as well.

Note: Test Drive delivers honest, yet totally unscientific feedback on a new store brand product and its packaging each month. Our panelists give a green light to items/packaging they like a great deal; a yellow light to items/packaging they deem "acceptable;" and a red light to items/packaging not meeting their expectations.
