Costco Closes Out 2023 With A Strong December

The warehouse club reported strong gains across all geographic divisions with e-commerce sales jumping double-digits.

Costco reported December sales growth of 7.3% in its U.S. division.

It was a busy final month of 2023 at Costco as sales across the company were up 9.9% for the five week period ended December 31.

Across its three divisions, sales in the U.S. were up 7.3%, in Canada sales rose 12.8%, and were up 10.5% internationally. E-commerce sales grew a robust 17.7%. 

For the 17 weeks ended December 31,, the retailer reported net sales of $82.86 billion, an increase of 5.9% from $78.26 billion for the 17 weeks of fiscal year 2023 ended December 25, 2022.

Net sales for the 17 week period were negatively impacted by approximately 0.5% to 1% from the shift of the fiscal calendar, as a result of the 53rd week in fiscal year 2023.

Total company comparable sales across a 17-week period ending New Year’s Eve were up 5.2%.

Company-wide comparable store sales for the 5-week period ended December 31 grew 8.1% exclusive of gas sales and foreign exchange rates. By division, comparable store sales in the U.S. were up 7.4%, up 11.9% in Canada, and up 8.1% internationally.  E-commerce comparable sales were up 17.4%.
