A Conversation with Daniel David

Daniel David has been executive vice president of Medford, N.Y.-based Global Tissue Group, a manufacturer of facial tissue, paper towels, napkins and bath tissue for retailer’s store brands, for almost nine years. During David’s time with Global Tissue Group, the company has implemented numerous new technologies to respond to customer demands for innovative private label products. Product launches have included paper towels in vibrant colors, an eco-conscious line of paper products and even glow-in-the-dark facial tissue boxes.

Store Brands asked David to discuss what’s new with his company, as well as what he sees going on in the private label industry today.

Store Brands: What are the most exciting store brand categories right now, and what makes them so exciting?

Daniel David: Of course, I am going to have to say the paper category for store brands. There is the daily need for standard household paper products. However, I am always excited to see what new innovations are offered in the paper aisle by both the national brands and store brands and to bring exciting new products to retailer shelves. Specifically, I am excited to see how consumers react to the new selections of ultra-premium and scented bathroom tissue. Ultra-premium bathroom tissue continues to grow in store brand offerings, and scented bathroom tissue has been successful in international markets.

Store Brands: What is your fondest memory in your career so far?

David: My fondest memory has been my move to Jacksonville, Fla., as we expanded production to the Southeast. It was my responsibility to spearhead our brownfield project, and the continued success and growth of the facility has been an unforgettable experience.

Store Brands: Who is your greatest hero, and what makes him or her such an inspiration?

David: My mom has been my greatest hero — not only for her continued support throughout the years, but for also pushing me to be better and do better as an individual and for my community.

Store Brands: How would you sum up your work philosophy?

David: My motivation is the added value and uniqueness that I bring to Global Tissue Group. My education and experience in problem-solving provides me with the tools needed to make an impact on a day-to-day basis. I have been lucky enough to work closely with the founders of Global Tissue Group: CEO Meir Elnekaveh and President Philip Shaoul. They have instilled in me dedication and loyalty towards work and a commitment to our employees and customers.

Store Brands: If you hadn’t gone into retail, what career would you have chosen?

David: I would most likely be practicing law. I am an attorney by education and was practicing in California prior to joining Global Tissue Group in 2006.
