Two grocery retailers well-known for their store brands also have two of the top CEOs in the United States. San Antonio-based H-E-B CEO Charles Butt and Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans Food Markets CEO Colleen Wegman were recently honored by Mill Valley, Calif.-based Glassdoor, one of the world’s largest job and recruiting sites, in its annual Employees’ Choice Awards, which honors the top CEOs in 2018 across North America and parts of Europe.

The Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Awards are based on the input of employees who voluntarily provide anonymous feedback by completing a company review about their CEO’s leadership, along with insight into their job, work environment and employer over the past year. The annual list includes CEOs of U.S. companies with 1,000 employees or more. A top 50 CEOs list recognizes leaders of small to medium companies, and other lists honored CEOs in the U.K., Canada, France and Germany.

Butt finished seventh on the list with a 98 percent approval rating. Wegman finished ninth with a 97 percent approval rating.

Zoom Video Communications’ Eric S. Yuan finished first with a 99 percent approval rating. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg was No. 16, and Apple’s Tim Cook was No. 96.

Butt inherited his family's H-E-B supermarket chain in 1971. The privately held company has more than 350 stores in Texas and northeast Mexico.

Wegman became president and CEO last year after her father Danny Wegman stepped down from the role. Wegmans operates nearly 100 stories in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts.

Tim Cook, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg are well-loved by their employees, as shown byGlassdoor’s list of the Top 100 CEOs.

But Colleen Wegman smoked all three, coming in at No. 9 as the head of one of the nation’s most loved grocery chains.

Glassdoor, a jobs website offering real-time insight into salaries and company reviews based on employee input, releases the Top 100 CEOs list each year based on employee reviews and ratings, specifically around CEO performance and senior management quality.

The list includes CEOs of U.S. companies with 1,000 employees or more. A Top 50 CEOs list recognized leaders of small to medium companies, and other lists honored CEOs in the U.K., Canada, France and Germany.

Glassdoor also publishes several Best Places to Work lists per year. Wegmans has appeared on the large companies list annually for the past five years, and placed 49th this year. Employees have written over 1,700 reviews of the company, netting Wegmans an overall rating of 4.1 out of 5.

Colleen Wegman received a 95 percent CEO approval rating from employees over the past year, according to Glassdoor.

Wegman, 47, became President and CEO last year after her father Danny Wegman stepped down from the role. Wegmans operates 97 stores around the country, with a new store opening in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in September, and future stores planned for North Carolina, Virginia and Washington D.C.

Colleen Wegman cracked the list’s Top 10, which was topped by Eric Yuan of Zoom Video Communications. Apple’s Tim Cook was No. 96; Elon Musk was No. 49; Mark Zuckerberg was No. 16 and Dan Cathy of Chick-fil-A was No. 50.
