Home retailer Bed Bath & Beyond’s Chief Financial Officer Gustavo Arnal died over the weekend at the age of 52.

Various news outlets confirmed the CFO’s apparent suicide on Sept. 2, in which Arnal jumped from his 57-story skyscraper in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood. Arnal joined Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. in May 2020 following  positions in finance at Avon, Walgreens Boots Alliance and Procter & Gamble.

"I wish to extend our sincerest condolences to Gustavo's family. Gustavo will be remembered by all he worked with for his leadership, talent and stewardship of our company. I am proud to have been his colleague, and he will be truly missed by all of us at Bed Bath & Beyond and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him," said Harriet Edelman, Independent Chair of the Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. Board of Directors. "Our focus is on supporting his family and his team and our thoughts are with them during this sad and difficult time. Please join us in respecting the family's privacy."

The news follows Bed Bath & Beyond recently announcing the closure of 150 locations and reduction of its private label selection. Arnal was also recently named in a “pump and dump” securities lawsuit that alleged he and others artificially inflated Bed Bath & Beyond stock.

Arnal’s death comes as the retailer continues to search for a new CEO following the firing of Mark Tritton. Bed Bath & Beyond has named Laura Crossen as interim chief financial officer.
