The vibe at the 2011 PLMA Trade Show was electrifying. Non-food exhibitors were eager to showcase their new products and animated with excitement to share their innovations. Companies seemed to be accepting the challenge of moving store brands forward with not just copycat items, but fresh ideas.

Packaging and Printing

When it comes to innovative packaging, Tetra Pak’s, Lund, Sweden, booth stood out on the show floor. The company’s Tetra Classic Aseptic carton package offers a great solution for the packaging of children’s beverages in a convenient, fun way that stands out on shelves and also allows for playful secondary packaging. The company’s Tetra Recart is the first retortable carton package designed for shelf-stable products traditionally filled in cans. The package frees up shelf space and less space needed for transportation of the packages translates to greater environmental savings.

Performance Packaging, Las Vegas, NV, was founded in 1995 and offers flexible packaging, folding cartons, shrink materials, offset and roll stock labels, and lid stock films. This reporter had the chance to check out the unique, patented Straw Pouches, which are great for kids, hospitals and the elderly. The innovative pouches have a pre-inserted straw, which means no more “glue on” straws that risk falling off. The pouches can also be custom shaped to promote any product.

Haviland Products Company, Grand Rapids, MI, operates eight filling and packaging lines in West Michigan, with a ninth high-speed powder filling line opened in Autumn 2011. Haviland’s unique step-by-step guidance into the contract packaging and private labeling industry is something customers depend on.

TricorBraun, St. Louis, MO, is a leading source of rigid packaging, with extensive capabilities in package design and engineering, logistics, and international sourcing. The company’s Injection Molded Tubes with In-mold Labels enable full surface decoration of the entire tube, while Gravure printing technology provides a graphic impact as striking as a magazine cover.

Visitors who were looking for shrink sleeves should have stopped by the booth for Gilbreth, Croydon, PA, who pioneered the shrink sleeve market over 40 years ago and professionally prints Heat Shrink Sleeve labels. Using shape and color, the labels provide 360-degree billboard graphics on contoured containers. Whether you're launching a new product, or redesigning an existing one, a Gilbreth shrink sleeve can increase your product's shelf impact.

This year it seemed so many companies can provide multi-layered expertise in the areas of printing and packaging. Impressions Incorporated, St. Paul, MN, specializes in the complete production of customized printing and paperboard packaging and offers numerous in-house services such as graphic design, package engineering and dimensional marketing services. Having extensive capabilities in both commercial printing and packaging allows them to direct their wide knowledge toward engineering the exact solution needed. The company’s Spotfree printing technology in combination with high definition screening, reduces limitations of traditional 4 color and spot color printing. This is done by using a choice of 5, 6, or 7 color builds.

Colordyne Technologies, Scottsdale, AZ, showed it full color digital press (CDT-1600 PC) and continuous label printer (CDT-1600 C). In September, Colordyne announced their partnership with Memjet, San Diego, CA, which offers game changing technologies that produce commercial labels and other color print materials at up to 32 inches per second and no minimums.

PL Services

Some PLMA attendees may have noticed this year that STR’s booth had a different look. That’s because UL, a world leader in advancing safety, recently acquired the Quality Assurance business of STR Holdings, Inc., Enfield, CT. The acquisition is part of the new UL-STR’s, Canton, MA, strategy to expand its offerings to global retailing and manufacturing customers. While the name has changed, the level of service and commitment has continued to grow.

UL-STR’s quality assurance testing services—including physical, analytical, microbiological, performance and sensory testing—are designed to ensure product compliance with domestic and international regulatory and industry safety and performance standards before they ever reach the shelf.

NSF International, Ann Arbor, MI, is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides standards development, product certification, auditing, education and risk management for public health and the environment. Their team of experts includes product engineers, chemists, microbiologists, toxicology professionals and regulatory specialists. Through product testing with NSF, retailers can demonstrate their product quality meets or exceeds the leading national brands.

Since the 1980s, Daymon Design, Stamford, CT, has been logging a ton of private brand miles hand-in-hand with some of the most progressive retailers, wholesalers, and food-service marketers in the world. Daymon Design’s work through the years has generated sales on five continents. In November, version 3.0 launched.

There are many types of pallets and several business were on hand at PLMA to offer visitors a spectrum of options.

CHEP, Orlando, FL, issues, collects, conditions and reissues more than 300 million pallets and containers. Pooling is a unique system that reduces supply chain costs by renting pallets, therefore eliminating the manufacturer’s burden of pallet ownership, maintenance and costly exchange programs.

iGPS, Orlando, FL, has depots throughout the country and offers durable plastic pallets consistent in size, shape and weight, and impervious to infestation. They are currently testing a temperature-monitoring device that will be directly in the pallets and give an immediate output if food was shipped within range. iGPS offers businesses the ability to rent the exact number of pallets they need.

PECO Pallet, Inc., Yonkers, NY, is a leader in pallet rental services. PECO’s signature red wood block pallets are used by leading manufacturers to ship grocery and consumer goods products to retailers throughout North America. PECO Pallet was acquired by The Pritzker Group in early 2011.


Tower laboratories LTD., Centerbrook, CT, is the premier effervescent product manufacturer in the U.S. with a product line that includes denture cleanser tablets, antacid pain relief, effervescent cold relief, and more. They are offering Effervescent Cold Relief Tablets in orange or original flavor, as well as Antacid Pain Relief in original and extra strength. Denture Cleanser Tablets come in three minute or overnight in Bi-Layer or in Single-Layer.

Aaron Industries, Clinton, SC, a 30 year-old privately held company, is a high quality, low cost manufacturer of private label and branded pharmaceutical products. These include national brand equivalent liquid OTC antacids and liquid cough and cold products, as well as a full range of first aid products. Aaron Industries has entered a new category with its Infants’ Pain Relief to compare to Tylenol Infants. The product comes in dye-free cherry, cherry, grape, and bubblegum flavors. Additionally they are offering a dye-free Peptic Relief for consumers who want a product that compares to Pepto Bismol without the dye.

Actavis, Morristown, NJ, is one of the world's leading players in the development, manufacture, and sale of first-class generic pharmaceuticals. The Group operates in over 40 countries around the globe and offers a US portfolio that includes more than 150 pharmaceutical products. At PLMA they introduced the company’s new Infants’ Ibuprofen. The berry flavor is dye-free and it compares to Concentrated Motrin Infants’ Drops.

Cascades Tissue Group, Eau Claire, WI, fourth largest producer of tissue paper in North America, employs nearly 2,000 people located in some 16 manufacturing and converting facilities located in Canada and the United States. The company’s management philosophy, 45 years-plus in recycling, commitment to environmental stewardship, and ongoing efforts in research and development are the strengths that enable it to create quality products for its customers.

Royal Paper Converting Inc., Phoenix, AZ, has become one of the leading privately owned tissue converters in the Western United States. At PLMA they showcased the company’s newest offerings, like the Thermo Grip double wall insulating paper hot cup and lid combo packs and the watertight, reusable Natural Cooler made with recycled content.

Health Enterprises, North Attleboro, MA, has 35 years of experience as a leading global supplier of consumer healthcare products. It’s no doubt that visitors to the show were feeling the ache of tired feet as they cruised from booth to booth. The company’s TheraPed and TheraToes products were just the thing to pamper, stretch and refresh feet. The zebra patterned TheraPed uses Therma gel hot & cold therapy to sooth feet, while spacers realign cramped toes. Health Enterprises also showcased a Hot & Cold Clay Pack at the show, which offers better heat and cold retention than Hot & Cold Gel Packs.

With over 16 years of dedicated experience, Diamond Wipes, Chino, CA, takes pride in being a leader in the contract packaging industry of wet wipes. U.S. Nonwovens was showing off its new tapered canisters at the PLMA show. The company also has a new baby wipes tub out, which features an ingenious rubber entry so it doesn’t scratch customers’ hands. The tub has a soft rubber flex push button to open, soft rubber bladder, and anti-slip rubber feet on all four corners.

The company’s AccuBrush with time strip technology offers a new way to tell when its time for a new toothbrush, as the strip turns from white to red when it’s time to be replaced.
